Why Human Skills Matter in Healthcare Leadership

At Ashorne Advantage, we recognise that clinical expertise is essential, but healthcare leadership also relies on human skills.

Across the NHS, leaders are working in environments shaped by workforce pressure, system change, and rising patient demand. Alongside clinical knowledge, leaders need the ability to communicate clearly, support their teams, and guide people through change.

Human skills help leaders create the conditions where teams work well together and patient care improves.

Through practical learning experiences, we support NHS professionals to reflect on how they lead, strengthen working relationships, and build confidence in challenging situations.

Human skills support effective healthcare leadership:

  • They help leaders communicate clearly across teams and services
  • They support better collaboration between clinical and non-clinical staffs
  • They help leaders guide teams through change and service improvement
  • They contribute to a healthier working environment for staff
  • They help translate leadership development into better patient care

How Ashorne Hill supports learning and development

Specifically for Healthcare Teams

Ashorne Hill works in partnership with NHS organisations to strengthen leadership, teamwork, and the human skills needed in complex and pressurised environments. We design engaging learning experiences that help NHS leaders, managers, and teams work more effectively, build trust, and sustain performance while supporting patients and colleagues. Our programmes are developed in collaboration with NHS leaders to reflect operational realities and priorities, using established frameworks and practical learning to encourage open discussion and meaningful behaviour change.

For more than 60 years, we have supported teams in improving communication and strengthening collaboration while reinforcing NHS values such as compassion, inclusivity, and safety. We also offer residential learning at Ashorne Hill, our purpose-built learning and development centre set within 35 acres of Warwickshire countryside. This setting allows NHS teams to step away from daily pressures, focus on development, and return to work better connected and prepared for future challenges.

Case Study

NHS Executive Assistants

Ashorne Hill partnered with a team of NHS Executive Assistants from CWPT to design a bespoke team development experience focused on strengthening trust and collaboration ahead of a particularly demanding period.

The session was designed to help the team better understand their individual strengths and team dynamics while reinforcing supportive working relationships. Delivered as a structured development day, the experience combined insights from Insights Discovery® and the Lencioni Trust Model with facilitated discussions and practical activities. The programme was intentionally designed to help the team build trust, encourage open communication and develop practical approaches to managing pressure while working more effectively together.

Colleagues from Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT)

Ashorne Hill partnered with colleagues from Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT) to create a Human Skills Taster Day that supported the Trust’s ambition to strengthen workforce capability in response to growing workplace complexity and pressure.

The programme was designed to encourage reflection and build greater self-awareness through practical learning grounded in the real challenges faced by NHS staff. Delivered as a one-day experience at Ashorne Hill, the session explored emotional intelligence to increase awareness of self and others, what enables teams to work effectively, and how personal values influence behaviour at work. Facilitated discussions and applied exercises helped participants consider how they respond to pressure and communicate with colleagues. Each element focused on supporting participants to navigate challenging situations and work more effectively with others.
