Tata Motors Design Technical Centre Case Study

Driving Innovation through partnerships.
Chevron Down - Ashorne Hill

A leading global automobile manufacturing company engaging in design engineering and the development of automotive products.

TMDTC chose Ashorne Hill to design and deliver a suite of management programmes to address a need they had identified to better support and develop their managers and leaders at all levels of the organisation, from early careers through to senior management. The programmes centred around the development of business and human skills and the promotion of a continuous learning culture.

The Background

Tata Motors Design Technical Centre UK was established by Tata Motors in 2005 as a centre of excellence for design and engineering, based at the National Automotive Innovation Centre in Warwick. Tata Motors, part of the Tata Group, produces a wide range of passenger and commercial vehicles. TMDTC’s team of automotive professionals develop vehicles and technologies to meet the needs of future generations in the world of autonomous, connected, electric and shared mobility.

The Challenge

Developing management, leadership and human skills across all levels.

TMDTC’s challenge to Ashorne Hill was to design a suite of programmes that could develop management, leadership and human skills for employees across several levels and experiences. The requirement was to provide a strong focus on interpersonal skills and behaviours, and there was a desire that this should contribute to embedding collaboration and communication within the culture of the organisation.

The Solution

Enabling learners to apply their knowledge in a practical learning environment.

Ashorne Hill developed three programme phases that focused on helping groups reflect on the different experiences and levels in the organisation. The development of learning was tailored to three groups: those in the early career phase, middle managers and senior leaders. All the programme phases covered core topics such as personal effectiveness, self-awareness and problem solving, but were tailored to the needs of the groups involved. Each of the programmes was delivered face-to-face over two days at Ashorne Hill’s training facility, enabling learners to apply their knowledge in a practical learning environment, help them take time to reflect, and work with peers to embed the learning before returning to the workplace.

The Structure

Focus on self-awareness, personal effectiveness and communication skills

Each programme phase tackled specific challenges and skills for the respective employee level.

For the group in the early stages of their career, the programme had a strong focus on self-awareness, personal effectiveness and communication skills. This phase also allowed for time to be spent considering topics such as time management, decision making and wellbeing.

The second phase centred around the development of managers with the initial focus on topics such as project management, assertiveness and presentation skills. Further topics that were covered included influencing skills, coaching, and mentoring.

The third phase was delivered to the leadership team at TMDTC which explored communication, managing for high performance, strategic leadership, and decision making. These topics were supplemented by business simulations to further enhance their leadership development.

The Outcomes

How our programme has helped develop new leaders at TMDTC.

Learners across all three phases of the programme revelled in the facilitation and quality of learning they received. The feedback from the learners shows that they were positively impacted by the learning, enabling them to apply it successfully back in the workplace. Additionally, they found the programme structure enabled an effective learning environment that enhanced their engagement and productivity.

97% strongly agreed that their knowledge and skills had been improved.

“Each programme involved high levels of interaction and collaboration as it was important to us that our teams could share experiences and learn from each other throughout. Our learners told us the programmes were immersive, expertly facilitated and gave them relevant and practical skills they could bring back to work and implement immediately.”
