This week, we’re interviewing Katie Phillips who recently joined Ashorne Hill as HR Officer. Our people are sat at the heart of our business and our guest satisfaction is something that we are hugely proud of. We speak to Katie about joining our family and why it’s the best move you’ll ever make.
So, Katie, tell us why you decided to join Ashorne Hill?
I wanted a change in career direction after feeling stuck for a few years and was looking for somewhere where I could grow and develop myself. I am passionate about recruiting, training, and developing teams to deliver exceptional results and felt I could make a real difference at Ashorne Hill. The role offers a good work/life balance which suited my young family well and had to jump at the chance to work at a beautiful venue and surroundings rather than a congested town.
Recruitment must be a big part of what you’re working on at the moment. What key vacancies are you currently trying to fill?
Yes, as with all hospitality and catering industries recruitment is currently a big focus. We have positions available in:
- Food & Beverage Assistants (40hrs)
- Receptionist (40hrs)
- Housekeepers (20hrs) (15hrs)
- Facilities Assistant Manager (40hrs)
- Kitchen Porter (40hrs)
- Evening Cleaner (22hrs)
What sort of qualities does Ashorne Hill look for in a team member?
Someone who shows dedication and commitment, who encourages the best out of people and can remain positive. A team player who is willing to get stuck in, help out in other areas but ultimately have fun!
What development opportunities are available and how will you be evolving these in your new role?
There are many development opportunities, just by talking to our team I’ve learnt how many of them started off in a lower role and progressed into management or progressed into other departments. Professional development is something we are keen to support and build on and is certainly a focus area of mine, to ensure all team members are provided with opportunities.
It’s widely reported that hospitality is suffering from a shortage of people, tell us why you think people should consider joining Ashorne Hill?
As Ashorne Hill is a training and conference venue, our work is mainly Monday – Friday, we close at Christmas, something which is quite rare in hospitality. We are a small close-knit team, working closely together towards the same goals and offer some great benefits.
Tell us a bit about what people can expect if they attend the recruitment open day on Sunday 5th December?
A chance to view our venue and surroundings, time to talk to existing team members and potential managers and a sneak peek at some exciting new developments planned at Ashorne Hill within the next year.
What benefits do you offer team members at Ashorne Hill?
- Christmas through to New Year’s Day off
- Mainly Monday – Friday working, with around 20 weekend events a year
- Great pay and profit related bonus for all staff
- Pension provided, employer contributions up to 10%
- Meal provided whilst on shift

- 22 days holiday rising to 27 days over 5 years plus 8 bank holidays

And finally Katie, what do you do to unwind and relax after a busy day in the venue?
